Optimization of Electrical Consumption in the Laboratories of the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana South Campus Through the Implementation of a Microgrid with Forecasting Adjusted to Renewable Resource Availability

Project Details

Description

This research project, conducted at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana Campus Sur, addressed the challenge of efficiently managing electricity consumption in engineering laboratories through the implementation of a smart micro-grid. Given the variability of renewable sources such as solar and wind, the team developed predictive models based on time series to adjust consumption to real energy availability, promoting sustainability and system resilience. The methodological approach included the evaluation of renewable resources, the design of control infrastructure, and the creation of forecasting algorithms. Despite technical progress and the generation of scientific knowledge, the physical execution of the civil works infrastructure was limited by budgetary discrepancies between the approved amount and the actual construction costs required by institutional standards. As a result, the project achieved a significant academic impact, facilitating the completion of three undergraduate theses and the publication of scientific articles. Furthermore, it laid the foundation for future research in smart electrical grids and electric vehicle charging systems, consolidating a line of work oriented toward energy efficiency and engagement with the national electricity sector.

Goal:
Implement a smart micro-grid in the laboratories of the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana Campus Sur, integrating time series analysis and renewable resources to optimize electricity consumption forecasting and management.
