Description
This research project, developed by the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, addresses the issue of bovine mastitis, an infection that impacts animal health and the economy of dairy producers. Given the indiscriminate use of veterinary drugs and their associated risks, the study proposes an alternative based on ethnomedicine and the use of traditional medicinal plants from the Cayambe area, Ecuador.
The research team conducted a comprehensive study of four plant species: Cinanchum mycrophyllum, Sambucus nigra L., Malva sylvestris, and Solanum nigrum. The methodology included botanical collection, molecular identification using DNA markers, phytochemical analysis, and in vitro evaluation of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties against pathogens such as Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus.
The results have scientifically validated the therapeutic potential of these plants, contributing to the academic training of biotechnology students through thesis projects and strengthening the conservation of local biodiversity. This approach promotes more sustainable agricultural practices and the revaluation of ancestral knowledge in the veterinary field.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>To conduct a taxonomic, phytochemical, and bioactivity study (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial) of four plant species for their potential veterinary use in treating bovine mastitis.
