Falling in Love: Sociohistorical Construction of Gender Violence in the Romantic Relationships of Mestizo-White and Indigenous Youth

This research project focuses on understanding the construction of violent and aggressive discourse within youth romantic relationships, specifically targeting mestizo-white and indigenous populations in Ecuador. The primary goal is to analyze how gender-based violence manifests during courtship and the social roles assumed by men and women in this context, considering its socio-historical construction. The methodology involves an exhaustive review of existing academic literature, followed by the classification and selection of relevant works. A team of 20 high-achieving students from Communication, Anthropology, and Psychology will be formed to collect, index, and analyze bibliographic sources pertinent to youth romance in Ecuador. Subsequently, an insertion process will be developed within urban and rural communities in Quito to identify and categorize the research corpus among the youth. Systematic analysis will concentrate on verbal and non-verbal discourses, utilizing structural and contextual models to identify symbolic elements and their sociocultural construction. Finally, the evidenced discursive elements will be interpreted and correlated with the Ecuadorian social, political, and cultural context to establish differential constructs of aggression and submission between the studied populations.
