Description
This research project, led by the GIDCARB group, focuses on the chemical characterization of guayusa (Ilex guayusa Loes.), an ancestral medicinal plant from the Ecuadorian Amazon. Despite its growing commercial importance in the energy drink industry, there is a knowledge gap regarding how ecological variables (altitude, humidity, soil) affect its metabolic profile and bioactivity. The study will analyze 40 samples collected from various Amazonian locations using advanced techniques such as HPLC to quantify alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and terpenes, while also evaluating their antioxidant capacity.
The problem addressed is the lack of raw material standardization, which limits the use of guayusa in higher value-added pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. By mapping the species' chemobiodiversity, the project seeks to provide essential technical information for growers and processors, fostering sustainable productive development.
Expected results include the creation of a detailed metabolic map and the identification of correlations between the environment and metabolite production.
