Description
This project investigates the diversity and pharmacological potential of ferns from the Polypodiaceae family in Ecuador. Despite their ecological importance and traditional use, many species face conservation risks. The research combines botanical collection across 10 provinces with molecular identification techniques (DNA Barcoding) to ensure taxonomic accuracy.
The methodological approach includes phytochemical analysis and the evaluation of plant extracts to determine antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and anticancer properties. The project aims to scientifically validate ancestral knowledge and strengthen conservation strategies for vulnerable species.
Expected results include the identification of species with high phytopharmaceutical value, the creation of a scientific database, and the training of undergraduate and graduate students. This study lays the foundation for the development of future biotechnological products and medicines, promoting the revaluation of Ecuadorian biodiversity.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>Evaluate the phytopharmaceutical potential of species from the Polypodiaceae family through botanical and molecular characterization and the determination of their in vitro biological activity.
