Dynamics of Plutella xylostella and its parasitoids in food crops of the Brassicaceae family produced in the Sierra region of Ecuador (Phase 2)

This project addresses the challenge posed by *Plutella xylostella* (diamondback moth), one of the most destructive and insecticide-resistant pests affecting Brassicaceae crops (crucifers) in Ecuador, such as broccoli. Given the pest's rapid resistance development, the focus is on enhancing biological control. The initial phase involved monitoring and collecting immature stages of the pest in the Ecuadorian sierra, identifying the presence of parasitoids belonging to the genera *Oomyzus* sp. and *Diadegma* sp. The current methodology centers on reviewing taxonomic keys and utilizing high-power stereomicroscopes for the precise identification of the parasitoid species found. Furthermore, modern molecular identification techniques will be employed to confirm the taxonomy of these biological control agents. The resulting data will be disseminated through the writing and publication of scientific articles in indexed journals (Scielo) and the presentation of papers at international events, directly contributing to applied knowledge for integrated pest management.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>To establish the population dynamics of the pest Plutella xylostella and its parasitoids through field monitoring and collection, supplemented by laboratory observation in Brassicaceae crops in the Ecuadorian sierra. The ultimate goal is to generate scientific knowledge that supports the development of effective biological control strategies against this pest.<br/><br/><b>Research lines</b>: <br/>Food production
