Project Details
Description
This project addresses the issue of atmospheric pollution caused by sulfur dioxide (SO2), a significant pollutant derived from the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial processes and vehicle traffic, and its adverse effects on public health and the environment (e.g., acid rain). The main objective is to establish a systematic protocol for measuring and assessing SO2 levels in critical areas of Cuenca. The proposed methodology begins with the strategic placement of sampling points, utilizing Aermoth Screen software to simulate pollutant dispersion based on wind direction and the location of the industrial park and high-traffic zones. Once points are defined, sample collection proceeds using membrane containers prepared with specific reagents, which are exposed for 28 days at the height stipulated by the EPA. Finally, the absorbed SO2 concentrations are determined through an analytical procedure culminating in the injection of the concentrated sample into an Ion Chromatography system for quantification. All analyses will be conducted in the Life Sciences laboratory at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, Cuenca campus.

Goal:
Implement a rigorous methodology for the collection and assessment of ambient air sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations, focusing on the industrial park sector and high-traffic zones within the city of Cuenca.

Research lines:
Study of weather and climate
