This research project addressed the issue of disinfection by-products, specifically trihalomethanes (THMs), in the drinking water system of Cuenca, Ecuador. Due to the lack of prior monitoring and technical limitations in water treatment processes, the research focused on determining the concentrations of chloroform and other physicochemical parameters in four main treatment systems during dry and wet periods.
The methodological approach included the use of colorimetric techniques and UV-Visible spectrophotometry, validated through international collaboration with Université Laval. Variables such as residual chlorine, pH, temperature, and residence time were analyzed to identify the critical factors contributing to the formation of these organic compounds.
The results provide an essential baseline for local and public health authorities, facilitating informed decision-making and the formulation of water quality policies. Furthermore, the project fostered local technical training and established a precedent for continuous monitoring of water safety in the region, promoting a healthier environment for the population.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>Evaluate the presence and spatiotemporal occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in the drinking water supply of the city of Cuenca, Ecuador.
