Description

This project focuses on evaluating soil quality in the fragile páramo ecosystem, specifically within the Monjas Bajo community, Ecuador, where anthropogenic degradation (agriculture, grazing, and burning) compromises the water-regulating function of these soils. Given the lack of universal evaluation criteria, the objective is to establish a comprehensive baseline. The methodology involves gathering general information from local institutions (Cayambe Canton Municipality, IEDECA) and community leaders. A field survey with experts will be conducted to establish physical, biological, and social baselines. Subsequently, sampling points will be selected based on altitude, vegetation, and human intervention to collect soil samples from 10–15 cm depths. These samples will be analyzed in the CIVABI laboratory for physical, chemical, and biological parameters. The final outcome of this comprehensive characterization will be the development of a specific management plan to mitigate identified impacts and restore soil quality.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>To characterize the soil quality of páramo ecosystems affected by human activities in the Monjas Bajo community by determining and analyzing physical, chemical, and biological indicators.<br/><br/><b>Research lines</b>: <br/>Chemistry applied to life sciences
