This project addresses the issue of trihalomethanes (THMs), potentially carcinogenic disinfection byproducts, in rural and peri-urban drinking water systems in Cuenca, Ecuador. Due to the lack of systematic monitoring and local regulations, rural communities face underestimated health risks derived from inadequate chlorination processes.
Over 12 months, spatio-temporal monitoring will be conducted across the main Water Management Boards (JAAPs), analyzing physicochemical parameters and THM concentrations using field photometric techniques. The study will evaluate the influence of operational factors such as chlorine dosage, organic matter, and residence time on the formation of these compounds.
Results will provide a scientific baseline to optimize treatment practices, guide preventive actions, and serve as technical input for strengthening public policies. The project seeks to guarantee the human right to safe water, promoting more equitable and sustainable water management in community contexts.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>Evaluate the presence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water distributed by the Water Management Boards (JAAPs) of the Cuenca canton.
