Research Interests

Recent research:
Integrated across biomedical engineering, environmental sensing, and communications, the recent publications present a cohesive program to (1) engineer biosynthetic control for tailored biopolymers in probiotic systems, enabling low molecular weight and polydispersity heparosan production through synthetic-biology–driven biomolecular controllers; (2) leverage computer vision and mobile sensing to assess river water quality via aquatic macroinvertebrate indicators, with CNN-based identification and OpenCV analytics supporting rapid, in-situ ecological monitoring; (3) analyze CIoT performance in 5G RANs, exploring information-update patterns and access protocol dynamics to optimize timely machine-type communications; and (4) design IoT-driven water-quality devices that measure free residual chlorine using multi-sensor (ORP, pH, temperature) integration, cloud connectivity, and validation against standard methods, alongside scalable geospatial apps for recording small rural water boards. Together, these works advance biosynthetic control of biomaterials, field-enabled environmental monitoring, IoT-enabled water quality assurance, and geospatial data capture for unsupervised communities. The methodologies combine synthetic biology design and biosensors, computer vision and mobile/cloud pipelines, simulation-based RAN performance analysis, and low-cost electrochemical sensing with rigorous validation. The impact lies in enabling tailored biomaterials production, immediate ecological and water-quality insights, robust CIoT deployments in constrained networks, and accessible digital record-keeping for underserved communities, with potential applications in healthcare materials, environmental management, and resilient water infrastructure.
