This body of work develops and validates advanced modelling, measurement and integration approaches for high-voltage and distribution power systems, with a strong emphasis on corona phenomena, insulation behaviour, and protection, control and communication in IEC 61850-enabled environments. The research combines experimental measurements in laboratory corona cages and field-like test setups with mathematical modelling, digital filtering, and multiple regression to characterize corona and partial discharge patterns under varying environmental conditions. It also advances practical protection and automation solutions for medium and subtransmission networks by implementing and validating overcurrent and distance protection IEDs, SCADA integrations, and multi-vendor IEC 61850 communications (GOOSE, MMS, SV), using real and simulated data and hardware-in-the-loop validation (Omicron CMC356). The work demonstrates close alignment between simulated models and measured responses (within a few percent to tens of percent depending on condition), supports standard-compliant testing and benchmarking, and provides methodologies for configuring, validating and coordinating protection schemes in modern grids, including motor protections, multi-vendor interoperability, and digital fault analysis. This integrated narrative highlights impact in reliable protection coordination, measurement best-practices, and the practical deployment of smart grid communications and monitoring in real electrical networks.
