Recent research:
This body of work presents a cohesive program on optimizing fuel system behavior, propulsion efficiency, and wear management in internal combustion engines within real-world driving contexts, with a strong focus on multi-point injection, direct injection, and lubricant-engine interactions. Across studies, we see (1) assessment of filtration media and cleanliness versus short-term fuel-use implications in high-altitude driving, highlighting the utility of pore-scale metrics like equivalent circular diameter (ECD) for media characterisation and clarifying the limits of cleanliness data for wear inference; (2) empirical evaluation of fuel consumption and emissions across spark-ignition and hybrid vehicles in urban Quito conditions, delivering practical guidance on energy efficiency in heavy-traffic cycles; (3) degradation monitoring of hydraulic-system lubricants in heavy machinery using ISO-standard particle counting and viscosity measurements to inform preventive maintenance and lubricant selection; (4) development of predictive models for fuel injection rate from zero-dimensional correlations, adaptable to various fuels including low-carbon alternatives; (5) investigation of nozzle geometry and operating conditions on injection rate for direct/ multipoint injection systems, yielding insights into atomization, spray angles, and potential fuel savings; (6) comprehensive review of fuel-injection-rate modelling literature, consolidating methods from 2003–2022 to support thermodynamic modelling and benchmarking; and (7) optimization of fuel-ethanol blends and gasoline proportions to reduce consumption in Ecuadorian engines, demonstrated through OBD-based testing and controlled experiments. Overall impact: advancing practical, data-driven strategies to improve combustion efficiency, reduce emissions, and optimize maintenance in regional vehicle and machinery fleets, while clarifying measurement best practices and model applicability for cross-vendor benchmarking.
